In the dynamic constellation of world cinema, sometimes a new figure does not simply appear but arrives with unmistakable force and cultural significance. At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2026 edition, one of the most talked-about discoveries emerged from Azerbaijan: the magnetic young actor Eldar Isgandarov, whose unforgettable performance in Jordan Firstman’s movie named "Club Kid" has captured the attention of critics, filmmakers, and audiences alike.
Premiering within the celebrated “Un Certain Regard” competition program, Club Kid quickly became one of the defining cinematic conversations of the festival. Following its screening, the film received an extraordinary 7-minute standing ovation, a rare and deeply symbolic gesture in Cannes. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by A24, acclaimed in a millions dollar deal, further cementing the project’s status as one of the year’s most anticipated releases.

Yet amid the glamour, neon melancholy, and emotional complexity of Club Kid, one performance stood out with particular brilliance: Eldar Isgandarov as "Nicky".
For Azerbaijan it represents far more than individual success. This cultural milestone signifies the country’s growing artistic presence on the global stage and the emergence of a new generation of internationally compelling Azerbaijani talent. Raised in a country where literature, theater, music, and cinema have long held sacred importance, Eldar Isgandarov embodies a uniquely Azerbaijani artistic sensibility: emotionally intelligent, intellectually layered, and deeply expressive.

Notably, Eldar Isgandarov is also the grandson of the prominent Azerbaijani People’s Artist Shahmar Alakbarov, one of the most respected and beloved figures in Azerbaijani cinema history. In many ways, this international breakthrough is inherited through a profound cultural lineage. Talent, discipline, and artistic intuition appear to run in the family, yet Eldar enters the global arena with a distinctly modern voice entirely his own, making proud the whole nation. Azerbaijan, being a country that gave the world luminaries of poetry, jazz, opera, and cinema is now witnessing the rise of a new internationally recognized screen generation.

International critics have been unanimous in their praise.
As Little White Lies observed:
Club Kid", being familiar at its core, is lovingly transformed by a new artist. Firstman strikes gold with film’s colourful cast of NYC reprobates, notably Eldar Isgandarov as Peter’s mooching couch surfer Nicky.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter highlighted the actor’s unusual screen presence and comedic precision:
Moviemakers get especially good results from actor and model Eldar Isgandarov as Firstman’s squatter houseguest Nicky, a curious, elfin creature who gives many of the film’s funniest line readings. Firstman has populated his film well, making good use of Isgandarov.
And JoBlo emphasized the originality and memorability of his character:
Firstman is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast, including Cara Delevingne as his deeply business partner Sophie, and — best of all — Eldar Isgandarov as Peter’s roommate Nicky, who describes himself as a ‘philosopher from Azerbaijan'.
At Cannes, where cinema history is continuously rewritten under flashing lights and red-carpet grandeur, it takes something extraordinary to leave a lasting impression. Eldar Isgandarov did exactly that. A declaration, that the future of international cinema may very well speak with an Azerbaijani voice.
