A sequel to "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" is in development, more than 20 years after the release of the original romantic comedy, with star Kate Hudson set to produce.
The film is in the "very early stages," with sources telling American media that 47-year-old Hudson and 56-year-old Matthew McConaughey may reprise their roles from the first film.
In the original film, Hudson played a magazine journalist named Andy, writing an article about modern dating. She convinces her boss that she can get a man, Benjamin (McConaughey), to dump her in 10 days. Meanwhile, Benjamin makes a bet with his boss that he can make any woman fall in love with him, and his target is Andy.
Hudson will produce the sequel alongside Stacey Sher, known for such hits as Pulp Fiction and Matilda.
The film has grossed nearly $180 million worldwide to date.
The yellow silk Carolina Herrera dress Hudson wears near the end of the film has also become a talking point in the world of contemporary film fashion.
The star's most recent film role was in the 2025 film Blue Song, for which she received her second Oscar nomination, following her first for Almost Famous in 2001.
McConaughey's film credits include Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won an Oscar in 2014, The Wedding Planner, and Mike's Magic. He also starred alongside Hudson in the 2008 film Fool's Gold.
Representatives for Hudson and McConaughey were contacted for comment.
The new film is the latest example of nostalgic sequels in Hollywood, following in the footsteps of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which was released 20 years after the original and also featured a magazine employee named Andy (played by Anne Hathaway).
In 2024, McConaughey told People magazine about his first meeting with Hudson before filming How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
"We immediately felt comfortable with each other, bantering, teasing each other, and laughing a lot," he recalled.
"There was a little rock 'n' roll exchange, like, 'Oh, this could be really fun.' And I think that's why I was cast, and that's partly why it all worked out."
